A Long Heat

by Joanna M. Weston

the sun has shone for weeks
leaving grass gasping
on broken stalks
        birds tumble the sky
        wings burnt with longing
        for deep rivers
trees claw faint clouds
striving to break
those closed doors
        people refuse to touch
        fearing to share sweat
        for another’s thirst

Nice. Really captures the thirst of this particularly brutal summer.
